Ways to Use Graveyard Dirt in your Practice

Graveyard dirt is one of the most controversial tools used in witchcraft. Although it sounds unappealing for some people, numerous spells and rituals actually call for it.

But First: Get your Hands Dirty

The first step in graveyard dirt divination is by finding a grave and getting your dirt. To get you started, choose a gravesite that has meaning to you. Just like any tool, choose with intention.

If you are working on a spell for abundance or career success, you might want to consider a resting place of someone you look up to. If you feel like you need the guidance of a deceased beloved, you may also choose to pick up dirt from that specific area.

For spells, you would only need enough dirt not to draw attention from the site you’re taking the dirt from. Before collecting dirt, honor the deceased by offering a small gift as a token of respect.

This can be a coin, flower, or anything that you wish to present. Then, discreetly dig in the ground, as if putting a flower in place, and put the small amount of dirt in a small container.

Graveyard Dirt Alternatives

If, for some reason, you can’t get your hands on a grave, there are other alternatives you can use in place of the tool. Some of the best ones are patchouli leaf, coffee grounds, and ground cinnamon.

Home Protection

Graveyard dirt can be an alternative to salt for the protection of the home. To use graveyard dirt for protection, simply add bits of it around the corners of your home to dispel negative energy.

Samhain Rituals

Graveyard dirt is a staple divination tool during Samhain rituals for a lot of reasons. Two of those reasons are to honor the dead and communicate with long-deceased ancestors to ask for guidance and wisdom.

Communicate with the Dead

Speaking of communication, graveyard dirt is one way you can connect with a deceased beloved, especially during Samhain, when the veil between the physical and the otherworld is thin. To do this, pick a time when you cannot be disturbed – preferably during the dark night when the moon is out.

With your graveyard dirt from the person, you wish to connect with, think of a question and draw about two to three cards. Meditate on the cards and interpret them at your own pace. Give them thanks for the insight.

Honor Life in the Garden

If you believe in reincarnation, one way you can honor the cycle of life is by sprinkling a bit of graveyard dirt in your garden. This promotes life and good crop health as this practice encourages the dead to “come back to life” in the form of their plants and crops.
